Chapter Thirteen

Juniper wrangled me into a flower print sundress for the day's festivities. Even though I’m not participating today, I’m still expected to be there watching. Brulio and the kings will start the week off with their—apparently famous—contest of strength. I’m not sure what that entails, and when I asked Juniper, she said she’d never been permitted to watch the games, nor does she work in a position where she would be out on the arena floor when they’re ongoing. I wanted to ask more about it, but she had surged ahead to ask me where I had been this morning at the ass crack of dawn. My mouth dried up, and I had struggled to come up with something to say. In the end, I told her the truth. Well, the bare minimum of it. Explaining I was with Brulio going for a morning run was truthful enough that I didn’t feel bad, per se, but lying to her still left me with a sour taste in my throat. I left it at that, but even now, walking to the sky box where I was summoned, my stomach is swirling.

All I can think about is the glaring scowl on the queen's face, and how I’m about to see her again, even sit by her for the next four hours. Will she yell at me for spending time alone with her brother? Or will she ignore me and pretend it never happened? Either option feels unacceptable to me. I feel like I have to speak first, get on my knees and beg for her forgiveness, just to never see that look on her face again. Since I’ve met her, she’s been all smiles and happiness, a real joy to get to know. And she’s smart, if that talk in her spectacular garden was any sign. So being on her bad side doesn’t bode well. I’m still loitering at the bottom of the stairs, wringing my hands, when a commotion of clanking armor and laughter behind me pulls my attention.

I glance over my shoulder to find the kings and Brulio speaking with one another in front of the tunnels leading into the arena. The kings have donned their full suits of legend, armor that they've worn on the battlefield time and time again. Even from here I can spot minor scratches and dings where the plating saved their lives, from blades or claws or maybe something worse. Brulio’s is the opposite, a deep matte ebony color with a matching helmet in the shape of a lion's snarling face tucked beneath his arm. I’d never admit it aloud, but he looks far more fearsome than the kings right now. Like he’s a real danger while the kings are here to put on a flashy show. My eyes trail down the whole thing, taking in every whorl of the ironwork. Whoever made it took care in the design, especially with the detail of the helmet. Perhaps that’s why I can’t take my eyes off him.
